Skokie Garage Door Pros
Skokie Garage Door Pros works on the 1960s-70s torsion and extension spring doors common in this housing stock, serving Skokie and nearby towns within a 10-mile radius.
Our limits
We don't quote a repair over the phone without knowing what's actually wrong with the door. On a house built in the 1960s or 70s - which describes most of the homes on this side of town - a spring that looks the same as the one next door can be wound to a different tension, sized for a different door weight, or mounted on hardware nobody stocks anymore.
Guessing costs you more in the long run. We also won't tell you to replace a door when a repair will hold. Plenty of doors from the 1938-1994 build range still have solid panels and tracks; the opener or the spring is what's failed, and swapping the whole unit is a waste of money.
On the other side, we won't keep patching a door that's structurally done just to get another service call out of it. If the springs, tracks, and panels are all failing at once, we'll say so plainly and let you decide.
What we don't do at all: routine home security systems, fence work, or general handyman jobs. We work on garage doors, openers, springs, cables, tracks, rollers, and panels. If a job needs an electrician for a dedicated circuit, we'll tell you that up front instead of working around it.
What to expect
Call 12243537692 and describe what the door is doing - won't open, opens partway and stops, makes a grinding sound, cable's off the drum. That tells us roughly what parts to bring so the truck isn't making a second trip.
On site, we check the door itself before touching anything: track alignment, spring wind, cable condition, opener travel limits. On the older housing stock in this area - a lot of it dating to the 1960s and 70s - the fix is often a torsion spring conversion or a hardware swap rather than a like-for-like part, since original components aren't made anymore. We'll explain what we're doing and why before we start, and give you the cost before any work begins, not after.
Some parts for older doors take longer to source than a same-day fix allows. If that's the case here, we'll tell you at the estimate, not after we've already opened up the door and left you without one overnight.
Service area
We're based at 8000 Lincoln Ave, Skokie, IL 60077, and most of our calls come from within a few miles of there. That covers Golf and Niles a few miles out, Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Northfield within about 5 miles, and further out to Harwood Heights, Glencoe, Rosemont, and Schiller Park.
We also take jobs out to Elmwood Park, River Grove, Franklin Park, Mount Prospect, River Forest, Prospect Heights, Melrose Park, Wheeling, and the towns beyond that at 12 and 13 miles - Stone Park, Bensenville, Maywood, Northlake, Forest Park, Highwood, Riverwoods, Bellwood, and Bannockburn - plus Wood Dale, Berkeley, Berwyn, and Broadview at the edge of that range.
The farther out a call is, the more it helps to know the problem before we load the truck, since a wasted trip costs you time either way. If you're near the edge of this list, call and we'll tell you straight whether it makes sense for us to come out.
Questions
Yes, that's most of what we see. A lot of those doors have original torsion or extension spring hardware that isn't manufactured anymore, so the repair is often a conversion to current hardware rather than a matching replacement part. We'll explain the options and the cost difference before starting.
We regularly work as far as Bensenville, Bellwood, Berwyn, and Broadview, roughly 12 to 14 miles out, plus everywhere in between. Farther calls take a bit more planning since it affects what we load on the truck, so mention distance when you call.
Yes. If the springs, tracks, and panels are all failing on an older door at once, replacing it usually costs less over time than repeated repairs. We'll lay out both options with real numbers so you can decide, rather than defaulting to whichever job pays more.
Often, yes, but not always. Some parts for older doors - particularly hardware that matches original 1960s or 70s installations - take longer to source. If that's the case for your door, we'll tell you at the estimate instead of after the work has started.
